People threw away 2.5 million tons of cell phones, TVs, laptops, and printers in 2016, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. Many governments have cooperated with businesses to provide the collection and recycling infrastructure that is required. Some claim that extended producer responsibility laws, which are supported by local governments and manufacturers, give manufacturers more responsibility for the reuse, recycling, and disposal of their own products.
